Some methods of asbestos removal can be carried out by any individual who is cautious enough, however, many forms are very dangerous and simply to risky.

For this reason, a proper trained professional such as a HSE licensed contractor should fulfill this kind of work.

Dealing with Asbestos Waste

Dealing with asbestos waste is a relatively simple procedure if you know how and are very careful to avoid careless mistakes or accidents. The typical method is to double bag and label. One of the first things you should do is contact your local Authority or Environmental Agency to see if they can provide a helping hand with its disposal. When disposing of asbestos, the disposal site MUST be a licensed dump.

To Work with asbestos

Do:

If you think there is a possible source of asbestos, stop and ask a project manager or specialist on how to proceed. If you apprehend a certain aspect is too dangerous, get in touch with a licensed contractor for further help.
Follow the work plan & correct method of procedure.

Take into consideration other hazards such as height and insecure surroundings.
Always wear your PPE (personal protective equipment), goggles, masks etc.
Clean continuously to prevent any hazardous waste building up.
Double bag your collected waste, label and dispose of appropriately
Wash your hands and face before leaving work

Do not:

Use power tools that will give rise to a lot of disruption causing dust to elevate and vibrations causing possible asbestos fibre release.
Sweep up the waste - Using a Type H vacuum that contains a suitable HEPA filter that will adequately trap asbestos particles.
Bring home the overalls you were wearing at work - possibly bring fibres home.
Use previous PPE the next day or ever again.
Eat / Drink in the hazardous area.

People in managing a project should follow simple guidelines

They must:

  • Before a project, contact the necessary persons to check for asbestos materials in order to prevent their disruption and plan work schedules to minimise potential dangers.
  • Make sure that whoever is working on the asbestos materials is trained and qualified to the necessary levels and is being supervised at all times.
  • Understand what kind of asbestos material they are dealing with so they know what kind of qualified worker is required to fulfill the job such as a contractor licensed by HSE?
  • Have a Plan before commencement of work - job involvements, controls and working methods that will be used.
  • Use and provide the proper equipment that is in excellent condition to enable adequate asbestos removal.
  • Adequately train you to use the equipment to the desired and safest standards.
  • At the end of each day, inspect the work area to  ensure standards are maintained.
  • Provide planned removal of asbestos to a licensed tip.
