5. (AIB) Asbestos Insulating Board

Used in many areas such as; fire proofing material, partrition walls, lift shafts, ceiling tiles and window panels.

Dangers:

This, similar to the spray, releases a huge amount of fibres with the smallest of disturbances, thus a licensed contractor (HSE) will usually deal with this kind of work.

6. Insulation & Lagging

Typically found in heating arrangements including boilers and more specifically the pipe work.

Dangers:

This form of asbestos is very dangerous due to the high release of fibres into the surrounding area causing you to breath it in. This is another form of asbestos that you should stay clear from unless you are a licensed contractor (HSE).

7. Loose fill asbestos

Will generally be discovered in industrial areas between walls, lofts and boards of floors. Also commonly found within the household.

Dangers:

Without a doubt the most hazardous in contrast to all other forms of asbestos as consists entirely of pure asbestos, thus when disturbed, releases 100% asbestos at high concentrations into the air. Again, DON'T work with this material at any time unless you are a licensed contractor (HSE).

 

Background Info

You risk whenever:

  • Your not used to the site your employed at.
  • The property you are based at was constructed pre year 2000.  
  • Materials that contain asbestos where not notified, discovered or passed on to necessary personnel before work started.  
  • You are not equipped with the proper knowledge to completely understand what you are dealing with.  
  • You are aware of how to comply properly with asbestos but choose not to. Typically to save time or because none of your other co-workers are doing so.
BEWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Asbestos fibres are microscopic and can't be seen in the atmosphere. 
  • The detrimental aspects of asbestos takes decades to show their colours. 
  • Smoking greatly enhances the detrimental effects.  
  • Danger is always there, as even though asbestos may currently be undisturbed, accidents happens and release will occur.

  • Heat and ventilating workers
  • Demolition employees
  • Plumber
  • Roofing workers
  • Decorators
  • Plasterer

  • Alarm installer
  • Gas fitting workers
  • Caretakers - Maintenance
  • Telecom workers
  • Surveyors
  • Cable laying workers
  • Electrical workers 

General Asbestos Containing Materials

Asbestos previously used as packaging between floors/walls

Asbestos spray on structural components of buildings

Pipe works have previously been strengthened using asbestos products

Insulation boards have been used extensively within buildings

Asbestos cementing has also been used extensively  for roofing and cladding of walls and other constructional components

Asbestos has been previously used as a seal, tiles, roofs and within many more products.
